COMEDY CLUB BOOKERS: THE GATEKEEPERS OF COMEDY

There are many different paths a comedian’s career can take.  Whether they wind up acting in a TV show, movie, or on Broadway; headlining a comedy festival; writing for late-night; anchoring a popular podcast; winning a Grammy, or hosting the Oscars, they all usually start at the same place – a comedy club.  The people who own and operate these clubs are the ones who essentially open the doors and provide the first opportunities for comics to hone their craft on stage and pursue their ultimate dreams.  Because when it comes to assessing if someone is funny and testing their comedy mettle, nothing beats a live audience reaction. These are the folks on the front lines who oversee these environments, curate the bookings, and foster talent development on a nightly basis.  Their knowledge, experience and wisdom as entrepreneurs in the comedy business are priceless to those willing to take this challenging yet rewarding journey.  They are the true gatekeepers to comedy stardom.

We have assembled some of the most prominent and astute comedy club owners from across North America to discuss a variety of hot topics, controversial issues, trends and changes that affect the comedy industry today.  If you caught last year’s fireworks, you know you’re in for a real treat once again.  This behind-the-scenes town hall setting will include audience participation and deliver big energy, strong opinions, reality checks, raw honesty, thought-provoking comments and lots of laughs.  It’s everything you’d expect from a night out at a comedy club – but during the daytime in a hotel ballroom.

That’s What She Said

Now more than ever, female empowerment is impacting the comedic landscape in an unprecedented fashion, but there is still a long way to go. At it’s core, the issue of gender parity across the media landscape, and the systematic barriers in every level of entertainment must be addressed and tackled from within the industry. How can we ensure that equally-qualified women are as represented in the writer’s room, in the director’s chair, in key roles on the set, in front of the camera and in top executive roles as their male counterparts? And how can we create a more level playing field and pay scale? Women, and men too, are speaking up and taking action in a number of ways and setting an example for all in the comedy industry to follow. Hear from trail-blazing women in the comedy industry as they discuss the unfunny fight for equal respect, equal opportunity and equal pay.

A SERIOUS TALK WITH FUNNY PEOPLE – MENTAL HEALTH IN COMEDY

The sad clown paradox is not a new phenomenon in our industry – the issue of mental health in comedy has always been present, however discussing it on stage with an audience was not as common as it is today. But now, the landscape is changing, with anxiety and depression becoming a thematic anchor in comedy specials, TV shows and films. What has changed? And how can comedians, whose jobs are to provide audiences with humorous relief, remain honest with the issues they are facing themselves? In this panel, we address the complex conversation about mental health in comedy – how to talk about it, how to cope with it, and how to laugh about it.
