Alice Moran and Jon Blair (From Set to Screen) and Lauren Corber and Wendy Litner (Beyond the Box) were the winning teams at this year’s Stand Up ‘N Pitch, the annual pitch competition presented by Just For Laughs in conjunction with CBC Comedy, the New York Television Festival and the International Academy of Web Television.
“The ComedyPro pitch program has hit its stride this year. We saw more and better quality in submissions than ever before,” said Executive Producer, Catherine Tait. “We look forward to seeing this year’s winners go on to great things!”
Moran and Blair delivered the winning TV/OTT/SVOD pitch with Old Man, a unique comedy anthology series with a body-switching twist. Moran, a Just For Laughs alumni, is best known for her work on the critically-acclaimed sketch TV series, Sunnyside (City TV). Blair is an award-winning writer, actor and sketch comedian with four seasons of writing credits for This Hour Has 20 Minutes. They described the pitch as “nerve wracking but great!”
Judges for the From Set to Screen pitch included: Samata Narra (Senior VP of Comedy Programming and Development, FOX Broadcasting Company); Kevin Wandell (Director of Development, FX Networks); Bill Lundy (Production Executive, Comedy, Bell Media); Angel Annussek (VP of Original Programming and Development, truTV); and Dan Kerstetter (Manager of Content, NBCUniversal).
Moran and Blair will be invited to participate as “Official Artists” at the 2016 New York Television Festival in October, enjoying exclusive benefits extended only through NYTVF Connect.
The team of Lauren Corber, Wendy Litner and Tanya Hoshi were this year’s Beyond the Box winners for How to Buy a Baby, a comedy web series about infertility. In what can only be described as a comedic twist Lauren Corber went into labour the day prior to the pitch and was not able to join her co-creator (Wendy Litner pictured above) at Just For Laughs.
Lauren Corber recently completed production on the comedy web series My 90-Year-Old Roommate (CBC Comedy) and is currently in development with several features. Wendy Litner is a writer for the inaugural season of The Beaverton TV. Tanyo Hoshi is an assistant director and producer, known for Cold Deck, Fading Fire and Riftworld Chronicles.
Judges for the Beyond the Box pitch were: Jon Cohen (VP Development, Big Breakfast); Zach Feldberg (Executive in Charge of Production, Digital Originals, CBC); Steve Elliott (Vice President of Branded Entertainment and Development, Comedy Central); and Jay Bennett (SVP of Creative & Innovation, Shaftesbury/Smokebomb).
The winners of Beyond The Box will receive a complimentary one-year membership to the IAWTV as well as tickets to attend the next IAWTV Awards. The winners will also receive a free trip (flight, hotel and festival pass) to the 2017 edition of the Just For Laughs Festival.
This is the sixth edition of Stand Up ‘N Pitch. Submissions for the 2017 edition open early March 2017.
