2018 CBC Comedy Originals Pitch Program Finalists Announced

June 28, 2018

And… here are the finalists for the 2018 edition of the CBC Comedy Originals Pitch Program. The program offers five Canadian creator/producer teams the opportunity to pitch their original web or TV concepts to a panel of senior development executives and key creatives from CBC Comedy. Our five projects are:

* Adelade LaFontaine, Tinder Tales
* Foad HP and Karen Parker, Off Colour
* Leah Cameron and Natalie Novak, The Communists’ Daughter
* Leonard Chan, Forever Home
* Nadine Djoury and Aimee Ambroziak, Hudson Heights

About the Teams and Their Projects:

Tinder Tales: Adelade LaFontaine (Creator)
Synopsis: Tinder Tales is a multi-episode series where comedians, storytellers and people who have never been on stage before share their most ridiculous dating stories in front of a live audience.

Bio: Adelade LaFontaine is an event planner with a degree in Marketing Communications and a post-grad in Event Management. Working as an event planner at numerous venues in the Niagara and Greater Toronto Area has given her the skills to produce and promote sold-out show experiences to audiences across Canada. She has managed events for major corporations and has owned and operated her own wedding planning business. Coincidentally, her love for love (and lack thereof) turned into a major event, Tinder Tales. For the past three plus years, Tinder Tales has given storytellers, comedians, and audience members, a platform to share (the funny side of) their stories and feelings on dating.

Off Colour: Foad HP (Creator) and Karen Parker (Writer)
Synopsis: Off Colour is single-cam, half-hour sketch comedy show that presents a fresh view of modern society from the vantage point of North America’s ever growing diversity. Off Colour is celebration of voices that are not normally heard; voices that have a lot to say and a very funny way of saying it.

Bio: Foad HP is a stand-up, writer, and actor. He was the runner-up at the 2017 Just For Laughs Homegrown Comics Competition, where he also recorded a set for Kevin Hart’s LOL Network. He has written for This Hour Has 22 Minutes and was the winner of the 2016 Comedy Brawl. Foad will perform at two Off-JFL shows this year, part of the Just For Laughs Festival. Karen Parker is a comedian and actor. She is a three-time Canadian Comedy Award winning/Dora-nominated actor and alumna of The Second City Toronto where she co-created and performed three successful reviews. Karen has toured the world with The Nearly World Famous DuffleBag Theatre and has performed with theatre companies across Ontario in various productions.

The Communists’ Daughter: Leah Cameron (Creator) and Natalie Novak (Producer)
Synopsis: In the thick of the Mulroney ‘80s, the daughter of two happily married Communists struggles between fitting in at a new high school and upholding her family’s outdated beliefs.

Bios: Leah Cameron is a Toronto-based writer and director who grew up with a different perspective on world events than most Canadians: her dad was a dyed-in-the-wool Communist in the thick of the Reagan ‘80s. To date, The Communist’s Daughter  has earned funding through the Independent Production Fund (IPF) and has been shortlisted for Sundance’s Episodic Story Labs. Natalie Novak is a Toronto-based producer and the youngest daughter of Polish immigrants who “escaped” Communism in 1986. She is currently at work on a book of short stories called ‘Cool by Association; Three Decades of Art as Business’. She has produced several award-winning short films that have played festivals internationally.

Forever Home: Leonard Chan (Creator)
Synopsis: Forever Home is a web series that follows an interracial couple, Leonard (a practical Asian engineer) and Jackie (an idealistic white cat lady), as they deal with the daily struggles of marriage while running a cat café that just happens to be located directly beneath the living space of Leonard’s overbearing immigrant parents.

Bio: Creator Leonard Chan was born and raised in Toronto, and performs stand-up all across Canada. He has been heard on CBC’s The Debaters and Sirius/XM Radio, published on CBC Comedy, and seen on stage at JFL42 and the Winnipeg Comedy Festival. He also has two degrees in engineering, which he now uses only as punchlines.

Hudson Heights: Nadine Djoury and Aimee Ambroziak (Co-Creators)
Synopsis: Ex-best friends, Melissa and Lily are having trouble being adults. When a freak accident brings them back to their small hometown of Hudson, Quebec, they have no other choice but to work together to rebuild their lives, one slippery brick at a time.

Bios: Co-creator Nadine Djoury is a comedian, actress and writer based in Toronto, Canada. Along with Aurora Browne, she co-created, wrote and starred in the web series Newborn Moms ( / CBC Comedy), which was nominated for two Canadian Screen Awards and named one of the Best Web Series of 2016 by IndieWire. Newborn Moms was also the winner of the 2014 Just For Laughs short-form Stand Up & Pitch program. Co-creator Aimee Ambroziak is a comedian, actress and writer based in Toronto, Canada. A native Montrealer (originally from Hudson, QC), Aimee has performed with Montreal companies such as: Repercussion Theatre, Geordie Productions and Tableau D’Hote. Her short film Good Girls, co-written with Nadine Djoury, won the WIFT-BravoFact Pitch Competition and is currently making the festival circuit.
